Communications Specialist

The Oregon State Bar Professional Liability Fund (PLF) is hiring a full-time Communications Specialist to support the PLF Communications Team. The PLF is the mandatory provider of primary legal malpractice coverage for Oregon lawyers in private practice. As the Communications Specialist, you will work closely with the Communications Manager and interface with all departments in a cross-functional approach. This is an exciting opportunity to join our growing Communications group at the PLF and become an integral part of the organization.

Who We’re Looking For

The Communications Team is responsible for a broad array of internal and external communications for the entire organization. If you naturally spot typos and grammatical errors, love to use your creativity and design skills mocking up advertising and promotional materials, and are passionate about implementing marketing and social media campaigns, then this position is for you! Our ideal Specialist enjoys diving into the detail work of wordsmithing a document as much as getting into the flow during an open-ended brainstorming session. You thrive on your twin superpowers of organization and time management to help you juggle projects and meet deadlines. You’re highly self-directed and can work autonomously, yet you flourish in a collaborative environment. You are upbeat and an avid teammate, eager to pitch in to support your coworkers.

If this sounds like you, we are excited to have you apply! You will be joining a team of dedicated professionals in a supportive, affirming workplace.

What We Offer

We are pleased to state that the salary range for this position is $68,000-$75,000. We also offer an excellent benefits package, including participation in the Oregon PERS/OPSRP retirement program, health insurance, and other benefits.

This position is based at the PLF office in Tigard with a hybrid remote work setup and requires travel throughout Oregon when COVID restrictions are lifted.

What You’ll Do

As the newest member of the Communications Team, you will hit the ground running and almost immediately be involved in helping us support the Oregon legal community in the following ways:

  • Copyediting and proofreading a variety of PLF internal and external communications
  • Creating and laying out publications, display advertising, announcements, and other PLF assets
  • Developing and maintaining a social media presence for the PLF on various platforms
  • Updating and administering PLF websites, including content, graphics, and occasional support
  • Managing a communications calendar of PLF events and activities
  • Coordinating publication and promotion of PLF events, news, and announcements
  • Providing administrative and scheduling support to the Communications Team

What You’ll Need to Be Successful in This Role

Being a Communications Specialist at the PLF is an exciting opportunity to help us assist lawyers in a variety of ways, but it’s also a challenging role that will stretch you as well as stimulate you. To set you up for success in this position, we ask that you meet these criteria:

  • At least three years of experience in a similar role
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, or related field
  • Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills with a keen eye for detail
  • Strong proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite; willingness to learn and use new software applications and programs
  • Honed aesthetic sense and a feel for design
  • Working knowledge of and experience with social media platforms in a professional context
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple ongoing projects
  • Capacity to work independently and also function effectively as a member of a team
  • Strong initiative, good judgment, and the ability to collaborate with others

Who We Are

Being a lawyer can be challenging. Fortunately, the Oregon legal profession has a highly qualified resource in the PLF. A unique organization in the U.S., the PLF has provided malpractice coverage to lawyers in private practice in Oregon for over forty years - enjoying broad support in the legal community. In addition to providing lawyers with malpractice coverage and helping them deal with malpractice claims, we offer a wide array of assistance, education, and resources to lawyers, judges, and law students around the state to help them lead successful and satisfying personal and professional lives at every point in their career.

The Communications Team is an integral part of PLF operations, wearing many hats and influencing various projects and initiatives. We collaborate with internal departments to identify PLF messaging objectives, then coalesce those priorities into broad strategic goals and formulate action plans for development and implementation. From idea generation to content creation to task execution, we shape and cultivate the PLF brand within the Oregon legal community and beyond. Through myriad channels and forms of expression, our job is to tell the PLF’s story and share our mission, contribution, and service ethic with all of our stakeholders - whether experienced practitioners, new generations of young lawyers, other bar-related organizations, or our own dedicated workforce.
